Innovative coating technology

HERMAperfect - for innovative self-adhesive material properties thanks to the combination of several adhesive layers

For a long time, it was considered an unwritten rule that certain properties of an adhesive material could be optimized only by sacrificing other desirable attributes. It was thought that the risk of migration could not be reduced, for example, without impairing adhesion. And especially high adhesion was deemed obtainable only at the expense of good processing properties.

At first, it appears incredible that the best of both worlds can be accomplished simply by means of a multi-layer structure. In truth, the only ingredients required to achieve the seemingly impossible were a comprehensive understanding of the relevant rheological processes and a determined development team. First, there follows a brief explanation for those who do not have any prior knowledge of multi-layered adhesives. Conventional label stock consists of a label material, a single homogeneous layer of adhesive, a release coating (usually silicone-based), and a release liner.

With multi-layer adhesive systems, in contrast, an adhesive coating consisting of at least two different layers is applied between the label material and the coated liner. The major advantage of this technology lies in the ability of the individual adhesive layers to influence different parameters separately. The temperature range within which a label can be dispensed on the one hand and used on the other, for example, can be extended.Given an ideal combination of the individual layers, the admissible labelling temperature can be lowered and the maximum service temperature can be increased at the same time without any impact on the adhesive performance in other respects. Similarly, adhesive bleeding can be reduced alongside an improvement in die-cutting behaviour.
